A croissant is a buttery, flaky viennoiserie in a crescent shape, made from laminated yeast dough. Its dough is layered with butter, repeatedly rolled and folded to create a flaky texture. Inspired by the Austrian kipferl, the modern croissant was developed in the early 20th century when French bakers used yeast-leavened laminated dough. Croissants are commonly eaten as part of continental breakfasts in many European countries.
