Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa) is a flowering annual in the amaranth family, cultivated mainly for its edible seeds. It is a pseudocereal related botanically to spinach and amaranth, rather than a grass. Originating in the Andean region of northwestern South America, it has spread to cultivation in more than 70 countries. Increased production and monoculture, together with climate change in its native region, have created production and environmental challenges.
